IELTS measures candidates' proficiency in English in academic and general contexts. Four key language skills assessment tests are in practice for IELTS:


In the writing section, you are assessed based on your ability to identify keywords. Your keen attention to the texts, messages, and ideas of the text, would aid you in answering the questions. The total mark designated for writing is 9. In the writing test, the following skills are tested,

  • Fluency, Conventions., and Vocabulary of the Content are Tested
  • Ability to Express Ideas and Information in Written Form
  • A written form of Argument and Opinion on a Given Topic



In the IELTS Reading part, you are evaluated based on your reading skills. You are given 40 questions specially designed to assess your understanding of detail, logical analytics, and your ability to gain insights into the opinions, attitudes, and purpose of the narrator.


In the listening section, you can listen to the sample text in 4 recordings. These recordings can be monologues and be conversations between two native English speakers. As per the prevailing provisions, you can hear each of the four recordings only once. Accordingly, you need to access 40 questions and answers within 30 minutes in this assessment round of IELTS. The listening Test evaluates certain skills of individuals, Ability to:

  • Understand and locate specific information
  • Analyze the writer’s opinions, interests, and attitudes
  • Understanding the Structure and logics of the Text



The speaking test in IELTS usually is an interaction between the candidate and the interviewer. The certified examiner assesses your speaking abilities and skills by providing you with a topic to speak on. The stipulated time for the test usually extends from 11 to 15 minutes.

In this face-to-face interview with a certified examiner, the candidate's language proficiency is tested by his ability to communicate verbally.

IELTS General Training is English proficiency taken by individuals who wish to migrate to an English-speaking country. You can pursue non-academic training or work-focused training. The daily life texts and professional and work-life language are assessed through this version of IELTS.

What are the Key Features of IELTS

  • Format: IELTS consists of four categories of language assessment, Writing, Listening, Reading, and Speaking.
  • Scoring: The overall band score ranges from 0 to 9, with 0.5 increments. Each section is scored individually out of 9. Thereafter, an average score of the four section scores is compiled to form an IELTS Test Score.
